At the time of writing during the coronavirus pandemic; the customer has reported more than 20% saving in electrical costs after installing the 2 VSDs – which is exceptional under the circumstances.

Project requirements

  1. Upgrade control system
  2. Install 2 x 200 kw VSD invertor drives
  3. Supply a tossibox modem for remote support
  4. Provide mechanical repairs and renewals

GTCS were contacted by Glascom whose primary business is in Denmark to modernize their existing tempering line and replace the now unsupported OEM equipment with the GTCS mk VI control system and install energy saving VSD s to their quench fans.

In mid February020 GTCS started the project with a view to completion within 2 weeks to return the equipment to production

It was decided in this case that it would be better and faster to completely replace the whole MP ( micro processor) panel so as to minimize complications during installation due to the short lead time from order to commencement of project  ( 10 DEC to  8 February with the Christmas holiday in between).

The old panel was removed completely and all cables carefully marked and cross referenced to the existing drawings.

The new panel was lifted into place and re connected

The mechanical work was relatively straight forward and the electrical connections were connected as per schedule with every terminal crimped and secured.

The 2 VSDs were mounted outside of the blower room and connected to the existing blower panel for ease of control, additional brackets were fabricated to ensure protection safety for the two heavy high value drives.

These drives were connected with new 120mm cables and a new emergency stop circuit for additional protection, additional earth cables to correct industrial specifications where installed

The installation was completed as per the project schedule and the power was turned back on , New software was installed and the system was commissioned without any major issues.

A Thorough testing protocol ensued and when all of the pre existing mechanical issues were sorted out testing commenced.

A tossibox modem was installed along with an adroit SCADA package to give the customer additional flexibility and options for the future. An additional monitor was placed at the unloading station for operator benefit.

The Furnace was handed back to the client in good time for production requirements.
